Water is the basis of all life, so probably it is the most important liquid in the world that has no taste, no smell. No wonder it is believed that life has arisen exactly in water because water covers about 71 % of Earth’s surface. Latvia is rich with a variety of water resources. Freshwater resources exceed its current and future water consumption needs for several times.
In Latvia the drinking water mainly comes from underground water sources which stocks provide people with the drinking water. In many places in Latvia in drinking water can be naturally raised concentrations of certain chemical compounds whose presence is largerly determined by natural, hydrogeological conditions specific for the region.
Everyone can evaluate the quality of water by its organoleptic characteristics – taste, colour, smell, turbidity. The objective information on the quality and safety of water may be obtained by laboratory investigations.
